On today’s podcast of Anti-Aging Hacks, we interview an endocrinologist, Dr. Shira Grock, and cover the basics of men’s and women’s hormones, what happens to these hormones as we age, we also discuss Thyroid, Osteoporosis and Diabetes.

Dr. Shira Grock received her undergraduate degree from the University of California Berkeley. She then earned her medical degree from the University of Southern California where she was elected for Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. She went on to complete her Internal Medicine training at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City and returned to Los Angeles for her endocrinology fellowship at the University of California Los Angeles. Dr. Grock then joined faculty at University of California Los Angeles and practices general endocrinology in Santa Monica.

Dr. Grock also talks about Thyroid hormones, the symptoms of Thyroid deficiency, and some of the ways to determine the deficiency and medications to treat it. We get into how the basic tests cover TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone), and how the TSH from the hypothalamus goes to the pituitary gland to create T4 and T3 which are the main hormones that regulate thyroid function. We discuss how T4 gets converted to T3, and how the supplementation of T4 and T3 can have different effects on the body.

Next, we get into Osteoporosis and Osteopenia. We discuss what Osteoporosis and Osteopenia actually mean, how they come about in the body. Dr. Shira Grock mentions that 50% of women post menopause have either Osteoporosis or Osteopenia which is quite a high number. We also bone density scans such as the DEXA scan to figure out bone density. Dr. Grock talks about the medications for Osteoporosis and Osteopenia.

Finally, we discuss Diabetes. Dr. Grock describes the different types of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 occurs when the body does not create enough insulin of its own, so this leads to higher sugars in the bloodstream because the body doesn’t have enough insulin to shuttle the sugars into the cells. It was more common in young adults but now shows up in increased incidence in adults as well.

Type 2 diabetes is when the body gets increasingly resistant to the effects of insulin over time. This is caused by indulging in high glycemic or processed foods that cause insulin spikes over years and decades. After a time, these spikes cause the cells to need even more insulin to shuttle the sugars from the blood into the cells, and this causes the cells to become even more resistant.

The net result is an increase in sugar circulating in the blood. We discuss the devastating effects diabetes can have on the body long term, such as loss of vision, amputations and much more. We also discuss diabetes medications, including Metformin which has been tried and tested over decades on millions of people. Dr. Grock discusses the weight loss associated with Metformin.

Dr. Grock also discusses other newer medications for diabetes that can also help with weight loss.

Finally, we end with her top tips for anti-aging. Listen to this hugely informative podcast, Dr. Grock shares a wealth of knowledge on so many topics.
